2014 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF14) Announces Canadian Film Line Up

The ballroom at the Royal York Hotel was all abuzz as we waited to hear which Canadian films would be featured at TIFF 2014.

Then Piers Handling,  TIFF’s Director and CEO  and Cameron Bailey, TIFF’s Artistic Director, came on to the stage and began introducing the highlights of the festival.

Talent Lab is a four-day film intensive which matches industry professionals with emerging filmmakers. This year’s governors include actress Sandra Oh and producer Jim Stark.

TIFF Rising Stars were announced and the four actors chosen to participate in the program are Sophie Desmarais, Shannon Kook, Alexandre Landy, and Julia Sarah Stone.

Alanis Obomsawin, whose film “Trick or Treaty” will be premiering, came on stage and gave a heartfelt speech.

Steve Gravestock, Senior Programmer and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo, Canadian Features Programmer, announced the Canadian films selected for this year.  Jeffrey St. Jules, director of “Bang Bang Baby” was brought on stage and we watched a clip of his fun, 60’s, sci-fi musical. This film took him over 10 years to bring to life.

We also previewed the documentary, “Monsoon”, by Sturla Gunnarsson, who also shared his thoughts on being part of TIFF 2014.

Short Cuts Canada programmers Alex Rogalski and Magali Simard also announced the lineup of 42 Canadian short films that will be screened at this year’s festival.

TIFF 2014 looks exciting and we look forward to seeing the great Canadian films, including David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, Xavier Dolan’s Mommy, and much more.
