Fashion Designer Andrew Coimbra Unveils his Fall/Winter 2016 Environmentally Inspired Menswear Collection at The Beverley Hotel

“Men are the new women”, is a line that has been used by Saks Fifth Avenue‘s executives for the past eight or nine months, and while women aren’t about to hand over the fashion torch completely, Toronto has without question became a hotspot for men’s fashion in recent years. Kicking off on February 22nd and running until March 1st, TOMFW (Toronto Men’s Fashion Week), for example, celebrates some of the hottest designers and labels coming out of the city.

On Tuesday night, Andrew Coimbra, a recognized Canadian menswear designer based in Toronto, premiered his fourth collection since launching his namesake line. Of Portuguese and Irish decent, Coimbra started his career in the fashion industry studying Material Art & Design at the OCAD University (formerly the Ontario College of Art & Design) before graduating from George Brown College‘s School of Fashion Studies.

For his latest Fall/Winter 2016 collection, Coimbra takes inspiration from the oil spill off the coast of Vancouver in 2015. “I began thinking about the different forms of marine pollution and researching natural forms of defense for marine wildlife, in efforts of juxtaposing the two themes,” Coimbra says. The collection is a combination of Coimbra‘s current aesthetics and a serious topic that needs close attention from the public.

Coimbra incorporated slick textures, oil printed fabrics and aquatic pop-art embellishments into several pieces in his menswear line of nearly 100% Canadian made contemporary sportswear. The Andrew Coimbra menswear collection is inspired by contemporary art and youth culture, and its aesthetic is defined as cool with a sense of refined ease.

The collection felt right at home on display for an exclusive audience of the Toronto fashion media and influencers at the effortlessly cool Beverley Hotel on Queen Street West.

A refreshing departure from the traditional runway, the line was displayed on three male models on platforms with the rest of the collection hung on clothing racks for attendees to see, touch and feel the quality of the materials. Guests were also given the opportunity to speak with the designer in person. Accompanying Andrew Coimbra‘s new collection was eyewear from Spectacle Toronto.

Coimbra expressed his gratitude for the Canadian fashion industry’s support and the positive response he received at the collection’s preview. “The turn out last night is a primary example of how absolutely supportive the Canadian fashion industry has been,” said Coimbra, “it humbles me to know that the quality of the brand is being recognized at such a high, international level,” he added.

Already having gained extensive experience working for Canadian fashion houses Phillip Sparks and Pink Tartan, as well as interning with world-renowned fashion label Proenza Schouler in New York City, we’ll be paying close attention to Andrew Coimbra and his namesake brand.
