On Sep 9, Food Truck Eats held their AwesTRUCK 2012 – an inaugural awards ceremony @ Evergreen Brickworks. The event was to celebrate the food truck movement & to present the People’s Choice Award. Readers were able to cast their votes on AwesTRUCK website for their favourite food truck and the winners of six categories were determined by the panel of judges—Alison Fryer (manager of The Cookbook Store), Matthew Blackett (publisher of Spacing magazine), and Amy Rosen (food and travel writer)

The finalists are:

People’s Choice – Gorilla Cheese (winner); El Gastronomo Vagabundo, Cupcake Diner, Blue Donkey Streatery, Buster’s Sea Cove, Dobro Jesti, Rome’n Chariot, Southern Smoke

Best New Truck – Dobro Jesti (winner); Buster’s Sea Cove, Rome’n Chariot

Road Warrior – El Gastronomo (winner)

Best Menu Item – El Gastronomo (winner, Fish Tacos); Gorilla Cheese (Sarducci); Cupcake Diner (Caramel Apple Pie); Rome’n Chariot (Meatball Sliders); Dobro Jesti (Deep Fried Rice Balls); Southern Smoke (Smoked Brisket with Smoked Mac & Daddy Cheese)

Best Concept – El Gastronomo (winner); Gorilla Cheese, Buster’s Sea Cove

Best Pop-Up – Fidel Gastro (winner); Babi & Co.; Big E’s Grinds

Upon arrival, we were brought to the Wine Country Ontario booth to sample some wine and give us a quick knowledge base of wine & food pairing. We enjoyed pairing the Henry of Pelham with oysters from Tide & Vine & cupcakes from Cupcake Diner.

We also loved the fried chicken from Dat Chick Craze, spring onion & chicken pancake from El Gastronomo Vagabundo, schnitzel roll from Dobro Jesti, & Sarducci from Gorilla Cheese.

Dat Chick Craze – fried chicken

Spring onion & coconut pancake, smoked chicken, cucumber, radish, chili caramel, fresh lime
Dobro Jesti – Schnitzel Roll
Hand pounded pork cutlet that are rolled up and stuffed with apples, cranberries and brie. Breaded and deep fried to golden perfection.

We also enjoyed the special ‘Tromba AwesTRUCK Punch’ prepared by Tequila Trombo with Tequila Trombo Blanco, Ceres Whispers of Summer juice, Hibiscus- Rooibos syrup, fresh lime juice topped of with Angostura bitters.
