Chef’s Challenge 2014 with Giada De Laurentiis
Chef’s Challenge 2014 in support of Mount Sinai Hospital was a great success. Participants who raised the most funds got to be on teams coached by celebrity chefs, Mark McEwan and Vikram Vij of Top Chef, David Rocco of David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, Bal Arneson of The Spice Goddess, and Derek Dammann, Chef/Co-Owner of Montreal’s Maison Publique. Judges for the Chef’s Challenge 2014 included director of George Brown Chef School John Higgins, HGTV Income Property’s Scott McGillivray, Donut Showdown‘s Maggie McKeown, and owner/Chef of Bar Isabel Grant, Van Gameran. The event was hosted by Food Network‘s Giada De Laurentiis from Everyday Italian, and emceed by John Catucci from You Gotta Eat Here.
Each team prepared an appetizer, a main and a dessert using surprise ingredients, under a major time crunch. And the results were amazing. Team Rocco won the appetizer round with their take on crostini. The surprise ingredient for the main entree was black cod and for the dessert round were nutella, cornflakes, rock salt and mascarpone cheese.
There were a lot of laughs going onstage coming from John Catucci and the hilarious Vikram Vij. All the chefs and judges enjoyed themselves immensely.
In between the rounds, there was a culinary cocktail challenge, using Absolut Vodka and mango juice, judged by Giada de Laurentiis.
There was also a donut challenge where every table got to decorate their own donuts and the best ones were submitted to the judges. The winning donut was a tribute to those who have survived breast cancer.
After enjoying dinner and a live auction, which included a full cooking experience with Mark McEwan that raised $4000; it was announced that Team Dammann had earned the title of winner of Chef’s Challenge 2014.
Guests got take home a swag bag full of yummy gourmet treats from some of Chef’s Challenge‘s delicious sponsors.
Lots of celebration for the winning team and for Mount Sinai Hospital.
