L’Altra Italia 2017-2018 Opening Party – It’s All about Karma: Questione di Karma

L’Altra Italia 2017-2018 Opening Party
L’Altra Italia, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Italian arts and culture in Toronto, kicked off its 2017-2018 season with a glamorous reception on Friday, October 13th, 2017. It was a fun event consisting of a fully catered reception and a film screening of Questione di Karma (It’s All about Karma), an Italian comedy about a wealthy heir to a coloured pencil company who is convinced that his father has been reincarnated in the form of a young con artist.

The opening night party started at Maison Mercer, a nightclub in Toronto’s entertainment district. It was a very spacious venue with a great sound system and chic, stylish art on the walls. There was plenty of food to go around, with Pizza Nova offering hot slices of pizza, Punto Gelato serving a bevy of gelato, and Culinary Studio serving authentic and classic Italian dishes, buffet style. Shortly after the reception, all of the guests walked one block north to the TIFF Bell Lightbox to watch the opening night film, Questione di Karma. Cristiano de Florentiis, L’Altra Italia’s Co-Founder and Artistic Director, took to the podium to thank all of the sponsors for the success of the opening night party, as well as sharing a few words about the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (ICFF), a well-attended film festival that takes place in various Canadian cities and showcases the best of Italian contemporary cinema. There was also the presentation of the Trilogy Award, a new award for filmmakers that connects Italy, Canadian cinema and Hollywood through a specific film. Frank D’Angelo, multifaceted Canadian performer/entrepreneur/philanthropist, accepted the award for his movie, The Neighbourhood.
Questione di Karma was a delight to watch in theatres. While not an Oscar contender, the film did have some funny moments where Mario Pitagoras, the young con artist who plays along as the ‘reincarnated father,’ gets his comeuppance when his wife learns that Mario has been taking advantage of the naïve but kind heir. While the ending seemed a bit rushed, and the concept of karma and reincarnation overly simplified, the piece received a positive response from the audience.
The opening night party for the L’Altra Italia’s newest season was a huge success, and we at Fashion Ecstasy wish all the best for this organization.
