New Talents at The Artist Project 2016 Opening Night Party

Discovering new talents at The Artist Project 2016’s Early Access Preview & Opening Night Party – Better Living Centre

The Artist Project 2016 brought together artists from across Canada and internationally to showcase their talents in the annual event held at the Better Living Centre.

The four-day fair (February 18-21) featured over 250 artists whose works were in the areas of collage, digital media, drawing, encaustic, glass, mixed media, oils and acrylic, pastel, photography, printmaking, sculpture and watercolour.

The art fair also included fun and creative programs and events like art chats, art walks, art battle, untapped emerging artists competition and road trip artist competition. There was an installation zone mixing sculpture and conceptual art, and an area displaying performance art. Performance artist Adam Filek‘s piece entitled “Walking and Talking Stones” had performers on the ground moving slowly and creating poses with the stones. It was very fascinating to watch mural artist, Mike Parsons, complete a black and white mural during the opening evening.

With so many talented artists featured at The Artist Project 2016, it is hard to pick out just a few favourites.

One of the artists making a huge name for himself, was the 12 yr old, Evan Sharma. Sharma was the youngest artist ever to exhibit at The Artist Project. He’s been referred to as “The Next Picasso”.

Artists Ruth Mora and Rachel Delph‘s installation “Our Critique of Everyday Life” was a series of cardboard houses made from LP covers. Artist Nurit Basin‘s installation “The Bedroom” was based on her bedroom circa 1985 with her drawings from when she was 11 years old posted all over the walls. Onomé + Enam‘s installation “Frida and Me” had a live model dressed in African wax print clothes against a backdrop of fake tropical flowers and bamboo.

Artist Philip Hare‘s “Weeping Willow” was a series of felt cut out faces held up by clothespins. Artist Morgan Jones‘ mixed media pieces “The Hollow Men“, “Moonlighting” and “Nine & Fifty Swans” had masked people with hopes for a better future. His whimsical gnome series was fun and heartwarming.

Artist Meaghan Claire Kehoe‘s colourful portraits of Albert Einstein, Nelson Mandela and Kurt Vonnegut were eye-catching. Artist Erin Rothstein‘s pieces mixed art and food with her images of McDonald’s french fries and donuts. Artist Bev Hogue‘s retro art style “Ready to Rumble” featured a rocker-girl character. Artist Michael Sparaco‘s abstract art was big, bold and vibrant with unique patterns.

The Early Access Preview and Opening Night Party of the 2016 Artist Project included food stations by Ace Bakery (bread topped with cream cheese and blueberries, guacamole, roasted red peppers), Quesada Burritos & Tacos (chicken, beef and pork tacos), Chef & Somm, and Tabülè (mini falafel balls). The scrumptious bites were washed down with cocktails from Gladstone Hotel & Stoli, Buffalo Trace Bourbon, and Walter Caesar, apple ciders from Strongbow, beer from Steam Whistle, wines from Kendall-Jackson and FAT Bastard and organic spritzers from Good Drink.

A portion of the 2016 Artist Project ticket sales was donated to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto for their creative therapy programs.
