An Evening of Champagne and Jazz with Piper-Heidsieck
‘Tis the season of sparkling wine! Whether it’s a glass enjoyed at the end of an elegant dinner or sipped at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, champagne is the beverage of the holidays. The internationally renowned champagne house Piper-Heidsieck ushered in the holiday season with a private champagne tasting party and jazz performance.
The elegant soiree took place inside a high-end private residence in the Entertainment District that offered a spectacular view of the downtown core.
Peter Sharp, the representative for Piper-Heidsieck in Ontario, was an excellent host as he retold the fascinating history of the Piper-Heidsieck brand and its longtime support of the cinematic arts. Piper-Heidsieck will be continuing its three-year partnership with the Academy Awards as the exclusive champagne provider at the 88th and 89th annual Oscars ceremony.
Sharp guided the guests through the tasting of the three following Piper-Heidsieck cuveés: Piper-Heidsieck Brut (non-vintage), Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage, and Piper-Heidsieck Brut Vintage 2006.
The Piper-Heidsieck Brut had a smooth mouth feel with plenty of juicy citrus fruit notes.
The Piper-Heidsieck Rosé Sauvage Cuveé was darker in colour (compared to most sparkling rosé wines) with a lively nose of black currants and strawberries with a bone dry finish.
The Piper-Heidsieck 2006 Vintage was an excellent choice for the final tasting with its gentle and airy effervescent, delicious biscuit and dried apricot notes, and a lingering finish.
Foie gras terrines from Rougié and brioche, chouquettes, and canapés from Maman Toronto were served as apéritifs along with glasses of the Piper-Heidsieck champagnes. As guests mingled, Canadian jazz pianist Thompson Egbo-Egbo beautifully played a selection of classical piano pieces in the background.
