Scrubs in The City Gala 2015: Tokyo raises $500,000 for SickKids Foundation

The 14th annual Scrubs in the City fundraiser for SickKids Hospital was held at the Evergreen Brickworks, and the theme was Tokyo 2015.

This year $500,000 was raised for the purchase of a new 3T-MRI Machine for the hospital.
Cheryl Hickey from ET Canada was the celebrity host of the evening.

The Brickworks was transformed into a wild night in Tokyo with ping pong tables, geishas, photo booth, a selfie station with Tokyo backdrops, costumed acrobatic performers who were on trapezes blowing bubbles, and a silent auction featuring great prizes such as Chanel bags.

Onstage performers were Japanese hip hop dance troupe, Pokémon and Hello Kitty characters who grooved and twirled, a violinist, a black mouse costumed drummer and an LED dancing robot.

Among the 900 guests attending were fashion designer David Dixon and his brother, interior designer Glenn Dixon, and volunteer committee members Sylvia Mantella and Suzanne Rogers.

The Food Dudes set up various food stations throughout, including a ramen bar (beef and pork broth, marinated shrimp and fried pork belly, noodles, bok choy, pickled chilies, crispy nori, bean sprouts and funky scallions), a sushi bar (spicy salmon, spicy tuna, veggie roll, green dragon, and sockeye salmon and yellow fin tuna sashimi), a Japanese slaw bar, and a yakitori station, (chicken thighs, cubed steak, lemongrass and ginger salmon, king iringi mushrooms, and asparagus).

Passed hors d’oeuvres featured sweet shrimp skewers, white fish with mango relish, shrimp cakes, poutine with miso, steak tataki, curried chicken on a scallion bun, and shishito peppers with aioli.

Desserts included miso cookies, green tea cakes, salted caramel and bourbon brownies, frozen mochi treats (mango, green tea flavours) and popsicles.

Guests danced away long into the night, not wanting to leave this exciting event.

Parked outside was The Food Dudes truck, providing a teaser for next year’s theme – London, by serving grilled cheese and fish and chips to satisfy any late night hunger.

A great time was had for this worthwhile cause.
