SickKids Hoapital Scrubs in the City Gala 2017 – Marrakech; the Evergreen Brickworks, June 1, 2017
Started sixteen years ago, the year’s most anticipated fundraiser in Toronto: Scrubs in the City, benefiting SickKids Hospital(The Hospital for Sick Children), was held at the Evergreen Brickworks on June 1, 2017.

Sickkids Hospital Scrubs in the City Gala 2017 Marrakech

In past years, the themes of this signature fundraiser included London and Tokyo. In 2017 it was all about the wonders of Marrakesh, from décor to music, entertainment, and of course, food. The set up of colours, smells and sounds evoked this exciting North African city. At the entrance, each guest was greeted by the infamous desert animal, the camel! Although it has a reputation for not being well behaved, these beasts were an exception and calmly posed for photos, as did the hawk and owl inside the venue.
The signature cocktail for the VIP Reception was refresh

ing grapefruit mojito. To prepare everyone’s appetite for the Moroccan plates to come, Toben Food by Design served mini falafels, tuna tartar taco, duck pizza topped with arugula, smoked salmon on a beet, stuffed dates, sweet and spicy chicken nuggets, and lamb kafta sliders as passed hors d’oeuvres. Sponsored booths had brightly coloured chairs and sofas that would be appropriate under a sultan’s tent. Toben Food by Design was also responsible for a few of the food stations which opened later in the evening; roasted wild halibut with caramelized cauliflower and pistachios, sous vide short rib with a date molasses BBQ sauce, fire-grilled lamb merguez with shaved Brussels sprouts and prawns ‘pill pill’. Other restaurants that participated in the ‘souk’-like food stalls were Byblos which served a duck pastilla and backed hummus, B’Saha restaurant which served chicken bastilla and meatless patties, and The Sultan’s Tent which served a Moroccan meatball tagine and sweet keskesu. They also served a traditional Moroccan mint tea.

To set the tone for the party in Marrakesh, erotic belly dancers took to the stage. Although the fashion choices of the guests were more modest, they were still very colourful. Joan Kelley Walker and Ann Kaplan Mulholland, two of the stars of the new show “The Real Housewives of Toronto,” were at the gala. Representing Major Sponsor Mantella Corporation, Sylvia Mantella was in attendance as was Suzanne Rogers representing Rogers, a Supporting Sponsor.

BMO Financial Group was the Presenting Sponsor of Scrubs in the City Gala 2017.
Over 1,000 guests attended this year’s event, raising over $650,000 for SickKids. Committee Co-Chairpersons Molly Fitzpatrick and Lucinda Kogan shared their gratitude. One of the donated raffle prizes for the night was a $30,000 gift certificate for a new car! Flamethrowers and stilt walkers entertained the audience, all for a good cause: a renewed, re-imagined SickKids, the second largest pediatric research hospital in the world.

As this year’s event was sold out, be sure to get your tickets early for Scrubs in the City 2018 Gala -(spoiler alert):
