Spokehaus spinning Club Event Toronto: cycle through and learn about Taiwan As a Cycling Travel destination
by sally warburton
The Evening at the Spokehaus Spinning Club in Toronto was indeed a unique way of viewing a country. The spinning – cycling event allowed one to get to know Taiwan as seen through the eyes of a cyclist. Traveling on roads, along the shore, on walkways, boardwalks, seeing the beautiful scenery of mountains, oceans, beaches, and people. It was a true Go-Pro view — even cars moved out of the way for you as the cyclist visit Taiwan.
Guests were offered different time slots to try the spinning class led by instructors from Spokehaus Spinning Club. What could be cycled in 12 days in Taiwan was covered in a 20-minute video bike ride on a stationary bike at the Spokehaus on Dan Leckie Way, Toronto, a spinning club located amid the many tall condominiums with lots of clients in the area located just west of Spadina and south of Front Street in this continuously developing area.
Taiwan is described as the “Heart of Asia” and is a gateway to other Asian countries if you want to include other countries in your visit from Canada. However, there’s so much to do of interest in Taiwan! The video showed the nature and the bike route, while the brochures showed the Arts and Culture, Food and Food Markets, Museums, Shopping and Night Life. So very interesting!
The evening allowed for networking with Taiwan Tourism personnel from New York City. In the information package were a map of Taiwan including public transportation in addition to bike routes, pamphlets on nature and food, Cycling in Taiwan and 2018 Taichung World Flora Expo. After the spinning sessions, guests could sample the delicious Taiwanese food from Kanpai Snack Bar on Carlton Street, Toronto. Kanpai served a vegetarian noodle dish, steamed bao with fragrant stewed meat, meatballs on squires and samples of wine and Eska water.
Where are the restaurants and cafes and shops? Spinners wondered as they cycled through the video clips of Taiwan. All these questions were answered in fascinating details in the colorful presentation when guests were invited back into the Spinning Room for a presentation given by Journalist Melanie Chambers, who had recently returned from a bike trip in Taiwan. Animated host for the evening was Gurdeep Ahluwalia of CP24 News Toronto, who created an exciting atmosphere. On site were Mini Kao from the Taiwan Tourism Bureau in New York City and Erin Yang from Los Angeles. Two lucky participants won Taiwanese tea sets as draw prizes.
There was lots of excellent detailed information in the brochures given in the information package upon leaving.
It was a very unique and fit way of learning about a country! For someone newly exposed to Taiwan, the country was presented as a fascinating one with lovely bike routes, beautiful nature to see, lots to do, delicious food and kind people. And what a fantastic way of getting to know a country – through cycling routes! Is your trip booked yet? Bags packed? Soon!
