Gentlemen raise your glasses and let the Great Whiskey Debate begin! On Monday June 24th at Brazen Head in Liberty Village, ladies and gentlemen were gathered to taste an assortment of whiskey from Scotland, Ireland, Kentucky and Canada. The companies representing these regions were Macallan, Highland Park, Makers Mark, Kilbeggan, Greenore, Canadian Club and Dark Horse. In addition to the Whiskey tasting from these regions, the evening was complemented with several fine hors d’oeuvres prepared with whiskey. There was pulled pork and shrimp both sauteed with whiskey spirit and these dishes took on a special sweet flavor from this marinade. The highlight of the evening however, was when the lines were drawn and the debate battle began.
Some important notes from each region of Whiskey:
The Irish will tell you that they invented whiskey and theirs is the finest in the world. In addition, the Irish will tell you that their whiskey has a smooth and silky taste due to the climate in Ireland and that it is distilled twice.
The Scottish claim to make scotch, it must come from Scotland. As in fine champagne, it must come from champagne region. The Scotts affirm that their whiskey is the best because of its barley/beer content and that it is aged in barrels in dry cells at room temperature.
American Whiskey (Bourbon)
The debate continues with Bourbon, Americans affirm that Bourbon is all about flavor and in order for it to be American Bourbon it has to commence with 51% corn.
The Canadians attest that Canadian Whiskey is the best because they use a different variety of grains, barley and rye and that their Whiskey is made in Canada, aged for 3 years in white oak American Bourbon barrels.
All in all the evening was informative and entertaining and the friendly battle of these fine spirits will continue to rage.
