Touhenboku Ramen’s New Location Launches Izakaya Style Menu!
It was a Tuesday evening and Touhenboku Ramen‘s newest location was packed. The new midtown spot launched a new Izakaya-style menu and features a wide selection of tapas, sake and shochu drinks. And of course, never leaving out their original ramen choices. We sat down and were greeted by the super friendly staff.
We started off with the Signature Touhenboku Shochu Drink, a delightful mix with shochu, soda and yuzu jelly. It was sweet and refreshing, the perfect start for a summer meal.
With so much to choose from, we decided to sample a large variety of tapas dishes. There were tons of vegetarian friendly options to pick from including the tofu steak, (a real palate pleaser), the Goma-ae salad with spinach and asparagus (quite scrumptious), and the potato korroke (pan-fried to perfection). There was an option to have the vegetarian ramen, which uses a vegetable broth as a replacement for chicken or pork broth.
The seafood choices which really wowed us included stuffed lobster baked with yuzu miso sauce, baked oyster with a creamy miso mayonnaise sauce and topped with flaky seaweed, and daily seafood carpaccio; all were excellent.
For the meat lovers, there are choices of lamb chops, slow braised pork belly, beef tartare and much more. For us, the light and refreshing buta-shabu salad with thin sliced pork on assorted seaweed with spicy sesame dressing really hit the spot.
We were way too full at the end of the meal but we couldn’t turn down the chili-infused and coffee-infused shochu drinks. Touhenboku has these specially infused for five days to give them their unique flavour.
Owner, Zuimei Okuyama and executive chef, Michi Tanaka (formerly of the Drake hotel and Opus) have themselves another winner. We can’t wait to return.
Touhenboku Ramen is located at 2439 Yonge Street, just north of Yonge and Eglinton.
