Travel – Washington DC

Washington DC can be a perfect quick getaway from Toronto since it is close and there is no time difference between the two cities. Flying with Porter Airlines from Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ) brought us there in less than 1 ½ hours.

STAY: Our stay at HI-USA (http://www.hiusa.org/)’s private suite was enjoyable. The beds were comfy and we had our own kitchen appliances that allowed us to heat up midnight drunk snacks. Complimentary breakfast was served from 7:30-9:30am. Other amenities include a TV room with a 60” big screen TV featuring Roku movies and over 150 channels, a common room with complimentary wifi, a library, a pool table, and a fully equipped, self-service kitchen for those who like to cook. The fun and social environment made it easy for us to meet new friends and travelers.

DO: Despite the government shutdown, there was still a lot to do in Washington DC during our trip. We really didn’t have to plan much as HI-USA provided complimentary DC tours and events such as Georgetown bar-hop night, Kennedy Centre concert, Arlington Cemetery tour, and DC’s monuments tour.

Other places to visit during the shutdown include the Newseum where visitors can learn about the news and media industry, the Arena Stage that features a variety of performances every night, the Crime Museum where we chased criminals and learned about the America’s most wanted, and much more.

Take a day and hop on a train or a 40-min drive to Maryland and try their iconic blue crabs, shop, eat & drink alfresco at Baltimore’s Inner Harbour, and get fascinated by the deep-sea creatures from Baltimore’s National Aquarium– one of the top 10 Aquariums in the US.

EAT & DRINK: The upside of the shutdown was eating and drinking for less! Most DC bars and restaurants were offering longer happy hours and shutdown specials. However, if you enjoy quality food like we do, try: the oysters & cocktails at Brasserie Beck located just across HI-USA, the guacamole with tortilla chips from Rosa Mexicano, the seafood from Clyde’s, and tapas-style Japanese food at Daikaya’s Izakaya.
