Motionball 2015 Glitz and Graffiti
Fourteenth Annual Motionball Gala: Glitz and Graffiti
Motionball, the non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for the Special Olympics Foundation, hosted their annual black-tie fundraiser on Friday, February 6, 2015.
Presented by Air Miles, the gala’s leading sponsor, motionball’s fourteenth annual gala was definitely a night to remember. This year’s gala was a milestone because for the first time in motionball’s history, it surpassed the $5 million mark. Meaning that all of the proceeds generated from the gala will continue to provide excellence support and funds for the Special Olympics movement while hosting events that aspire to put the fun back in fundraising (pun intended).
Glitz and Graffiti was the theme of this year’s gala, which was evident in every corner of the renowned Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. The elements of glitz and glamour were incorporated into every aspect of the décor, including the cascading strings of pearls and sparkling gems that lined the pathway to the cocktail area. Adrian Hayles’ (Toronto-based artist) live painting of the Toronto city skyline greeted the guests upon entry. Many Special Olympic stars were seen with medals around their necks as they were mingling with the guests. There was also no shortage of celebrity athletes and media personalities in attendance: Chad Owens (Toronto Argonauts), Rosie MacLennan (Olympian), Ben Scrivens (Edmonton Oilers), Devo Brown (Kiss 92.5fm), Gurdeep Ahluwalia (TSN), Gerry Dee (Comedian/Actor), and far too many more to list!
The musical entertainment was one of the biggest highlights of the night. Throughout the event, nine DJs and seven bands/duos played hits that kept everyone dancing and grooving into the early morning hours.
Table talk catering provided scrumptious food including braised beef short ribs, cornish hen, shrimp pasta and flatbread.
The silent auction was incredibly massive and featured many amazing prizes at different starting bid prices, which made bidding more accessible to everyone in attendance. Items included four platinum tickets to the Rogers Cup, a signed Sidney Crosby Team Canada jersey, a deluxe spa package from Elmwood Spa, two tickets to the upcoming New Kids on The Block concert, and a complete Bespoke Suiting Experience by Made Clothing.
Paintings by some of the city’s up and coming artistic talent were also auctioned off that night. Toronto artists JessGo, Jimmy Chiale, and Jay Soule had some of the best artwork in the auction. The raffle included two spectacular prizes such as two VIP tickets to Coachella including two roundtrip flights and a New York City trip for two including hotel and roundtrip flight accommodations.
As for the rest of the night, once the last band performed their final song, DJ Skratch Bastid and The Great Grantsby took over and transformed the gala into a gigantic nightclub.
Motionball is a national non-profit organization that raises funds and awareness for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation and introduces the next generation of supporters to the Special Olympics movement. They currently organize a series of events all throughout Canada including the Marathon of Sport and the Fall Classic Golf Tournament.
