Turkey Travel Blog – The Gorgeous Izmir City
(Scroll down for English Version /
English translation by Tanya)
English Version /
After touring around Turkey, there is still a lovely city that lingers in my mind besides Istanbul, that city is called Izmir.
Izmir is as known as the “Aegean Sea Bride” or “Aegean Pearl.” Although it is ranked Turkey‘s third most populous city and second-largest container port, in our eyes, it is a gorgeous small city with a blend of tradition and modernity. Visitors can feel completely relaxed and at ease here.
English Version /
Even when traveling in Greece, I was tired of the omnipresent Roman monuments. However, visiting the remains of the Ancient Greek and Roman times in Izmir is not exhausting at all. We went to the Agora Open Air Museum, an outdoor museum with a unique three-floor design. It can be traced back to Roman architecture in the 4th century BC when it was a government place used for political meetings and people’s courts. When walking through a row of stone columns and arches, we saw many stone sculptures left by the Greeks, including the God of sea Poseidon (po-se-da-wo-ne) in Greek mythology, and Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, agriculture, and presides over grains and the fertility of the earth.
English Version /
Hunger hits after a tour around the museum. Luckily, it wasn’t hard looking for a restaurant to replenish our energy. After a short break, we continued to walk to the Izmir Clock Tower, a landmark built in 1901. The clock tower is located at the bustling Konak Square of Izmir. The clock tower was designed by a French architect to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdul Hamid II‘s accession to the throne. The structure is 25 meters (82 ft) high and operates all year round. An earthquake in the 1970s caused this clock to stop working for once and for once only. This historic landmark is also a hub to reach various travel destinations in Izmir.
English Version /
We also came to Asansör, another historic landmark of Izmir. This is a famous big elevator in Izmir. Izmir‘s residential area terrain includes a steep cliff that barriers two parts of the city. Many houses are built on the hillside. In 1907, a wealthy man built this large elevator as a work of public service to ease access from the coastline to the hillside. At first, it was operated by hydraulic power, then replaced by electricity later. Besides providing easy access between the lower and upper streets, the elevator also serves as a destination landmark that boosts tourism. What’s ironic is this type of elevator was also seen on a university campus in Taiwan in the 21st century. However, the purpose was completely different.
English Version /
The next stop on our itinerary was the ancient Greek city of Ephesus, built in the 10th century BC. This ancient city is the largest ancient Greek city in Anatolia. The ancients called it “The Capital of Asia.” There are ruins of churches, temples, and of course, many Greek stone statues. The nearby Temple of Artemis is listed as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. The temple was destroyed several times by both natural and man-made disasters. To this day, the site has not been restored. Today, tourists can only see a remaining stone pillar. Despite the fact that only fragments remain at the site, the landmark still attracts around two million tourists and history junkies to visit this site each year.
English Version /
Another thing we like about Izmir is its beautiful coastline and nature. Trees line along the sea coast. The scenery at night or day is unforgettable.
On the tip of the peninsula is a scenic coastal town called Çeşme,” “Çeşme” means “fountain,” and the name draws reference from the city’s many Ottoman fountains. We saw yachts and the remains of historic castles in this town.
English Version /
In 2012, Izmir built an artificial island called “Bird Paradise.” The ideal habitat successfully attracts over 200 species of birds, including migratory birds and a vast number of flamingos. The scene reminds us of the hundreds of eagles species soaring the gorge of Abha‘s National Park in Saudi Arabia. The lake on this island is also home to All kinds of fish.
However, be careful not to get too carried away by the picturesque scenery and forget to do some shopping. Because visiting the traditional markets is a must for buying unique souvenirs.
