They weren’t kidding when they say the Northern Lights are at their 11-year-cycle peak. We needn’t have to try escaping the city lights; we checked it off our list the first night we arrived Iceland, in the city of Reykjavík! You’ve got until April to see the Northern Lights dance above the city sky like we did!

Rent a car Rent a car in South Iceland, no matter where your destination is, there are always lots of great sightseeing spots worth stopping for. If you want to go further into the highlands, always get a 4×4!

Day 1
Reykjavík -> Thingvellir/ Þingvellir -> Laugarvatn -> Geysir -> Gullfoss waterfall-> Blue Lagoon

Depart from the city of Reykjavík and drive down east, stop by Thingvellir/ Þingvellir to see the site of one of the world’s most ancient parliament. Continue further east to Laugarvatn to see the lake, don’t bother going to Laugarvatn Fontana (one of the travel tours’ hot spot), save your time for Blue Lagoon.

Continue driving east to Geysir, the geysers erupt every few minutes (as of February 2014), you won’t miss it. The mighty Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall is located east of Geysir; watch River Hvítá fall sharply down a 105 ft. deep crevice. Winter makes Gullfoss a more spectacular view with the blue water juxtaposed with white ice.
Tip: Drive off the road of Þingvallavegur, enjoy the view and get close to the Icelandic horses. You will see plenty along the way.

Blue Lagoon
Hidden behind the black lava is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions Blue Lagoon. Cliché? Maybe, but definitely worth it. Just imagine the hot tubs up in Mont Tremblant, except with geothermal seawater that ripples into infinity. So what am I saying? They’re incomparable. The water is so milky due to the rich content of natural silica and minerals. Slather some white-silica mud on your face and it will leave your skin silky smooth.
Tip: Book your spa package & services in advance to avoid disappointment.
** Blue Lagoon would be at the opposite direction of Gullfoss. A 40 min drive, southwest from Reykjavík. We made it the same day since we booked our stay at Reykjavík.
