After twenty five years, the Dragon Ball in support of Yee Hong ushered in the year of the horse at Metro Toronto Convention Centre with a performance by 25 lions and a golden dragon. This long standing fundraising gala hosted by Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation has raised about $25 million over the years for geriatric care and other services and programs for the seniors.
The pre-dinner reception showcased the “X-treme” cuisine of Hong Kong’s “Demon Chef” Alvin Leung who mixed ice cream with well-known the Chinese liquors Moutai and “Rose Dew”. Upon entering the reception one was greeted by special dish of crispy roasted suckling pig. A selection of sushi, spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll as well as sashimi. Shrimp shu mai, beef dumplings and a unique pumpkin and red bean paste appetizer was a well visited food station. Unlike many events, there were more than enough fresh shucked oysters and clams. The George Brown College Chefs School was also there to offer a special duck bread pudding.
Over 1000 guests attended the Dragon Ball and tasted the menu designed by Michelin 3-Star Chef Alvin Leung. Mayor Hazel McCallion of Mississauga, Member of Parliament Ms Olivia Chow, and John Higgins, director of George Brown’s Culinary School, were among some the VIPs seen at the gala. Silent auction items such as diamond rings, original art, a semi precious stone globe and juke box were offered in support of the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation. Purchasers of Grand Raffle tickets had an opportunity to win a 2014 Lexus-IS. With a continuation of the support demonstrated this January evening in Toronto, the Dragon Ball will be sure to be around for another 25 years!
