Attention foodies, party-goers and night owls! King street west‘s newly opened Latino street food style Valdez Restaurant opens until 2am!
It was a great experience at the VIP tasting of the new Valdez restaurant, the brainchild of Chef Steve Gonzalez (former chef de cuisine of Origin and fans’ favourite on Top Chef Canada). The restaurant, designed by Ian E.T Rydberg from SOLID Design and Build, transforms the space into streets of Latino countries. The entrance will be transformed into a street-style shop where guests can purchase cigars, sauces, and coffee. The bustling open kitchen allowed us to see the chefs in action while we sipped on their signature Mojito Valdez made of Bacardi8, cilantro, mint, and Jarritos lime soda.
The menu consisted of 4 sections, “ceviche”, “stuff”, “more”, and “dulce y algo”. The ceviches were delish. ‘Mixto’ brings octopus, calamari, and mussels together with a hint of citrus and sweetness of maize and sweet potato. There are also vegetarian ceviches available for veggie lovers.
The “stuff” section is all about fun and flavour, composed of traditional Latin-American street food such as chulpes, frijoles and chips & guac. The chulpes and frijoles also have vegan options available.
The “more” is the entrees. Their signature is the Adobo pork which can be shared with 8 people. However, it requires up to 48 hours of notice in advance for preparation. When a dish needs that much time to prepare, you know it must be good!
“Dulce y algo” is the sweet stuff! And of course, prepared in-house with traditional Latino ingredients. Try the helado de salpicon, it’ll bring back your childhood memories!
Valdez is open from 5:00 pm -10:30 pm on Mon-Wed, and offers late-night menus until midnight from Thursday to Saturday. The bar and rooftop patio serve drinks until 2 am.
It was definitely a fun and enjoyable experience at Valdez and we’ll definitely be back for some more Latino street food and Mojito Valdez, CHEERS!
