SIAL Innovation 2023: Unveiling the Top 10 Finalists
On Tuesday, April 18, 2023, North America’s largest food innovation trade show, SIAL Canada, unveiled the top ten finalists for its annual 2023 SIAL Innovation Competition. The SIAL Innovation is one of four international competitions held within the three-day tradeshow that recognizes global innovations and food trends in the food and beverage industry. While the ten finalists were introduced at an exclusive lunch event on Tuesday, the winners will be announced during SIAL on May 9 at 10:45 AM at the Enercare Centre in downtown Toronto.
These finalists exemplified this year’s theme, “Own the Change.” This theme was chosen because our food system needs a massive overhaul in order to feed the world sustainably. Jo-Ann McArthur, this year’s grand jury president and food innovation expert, explained that the finalists had developed a new product that helps us progress towards sustainability and provides a further advantage to Canadian consumers in terms of enjoyment, health, or convenience. Our product range includes items for individual customers, food service, and packaging, such as healthier and more environmentally-friendly versions of classic snacks, ready-to-eat formats that are more convenient, and ingredients that are functional or made from upcycled materials.”
These finalists were based on the following criteria:
In no particular order, here are the top ten SIAL Innovation 2023 Finalists:
Four winners will be chosen from this list for the grand prizes and the special Own the Change prize. The top three Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners will share different grants from Neilsen (a total value of $20,000) and receive a booth at SIAL Canada Montreal 2024 (for Gold and Silver winners). The Own the Change prize will be awarded a $3,750 discount at Mitacs (50% of their contribution) on one internship unit for an R&D project worth $15,000.
Other highlights of the event included a cocktail reception where guests enjoyed fabulous hors d’oeuvres prepared by Chef Erica Karbelnik, the winner of Top Chef Canada Season 9 and Executive Chef/ Co-owner of Karbs Catering and Private Events. The non-alcoholic beverages were provided by La Presserie and The Healthtea Inc. Guests also heard from Maëlle Rey-Maréchal, the Marketing and Special Operations Manager for SIAL Canada, who went into detail about the SIAL tradeshow and its action-packed agenda. Chef Erica shared with the guests that she will be leading a seminar/cooking demonstration called
Maximizing Profit and Flavor, Mastering Cost-Effective Cooking, at the tradeshow on May 9, 10:30 – 11:15 AM ET. In this demonstration, she will showcase how to stretch minimal ingredients — which in this case will be a whole duck, pear, sunchoke, and radicchio— into multiple tasty dishes and, in turn, save money on groceries. She will also use products from the SIAL Innovation finalists in a quick-fire challenge.
