The Art of Tom Russell at Liss Gallery

Tom Russell is best known as a singer/songwriter, but his creativity and passion also extends to painting.

Liss Gallery in Yorkville is presenting his artwork now until September 18, 2014.

Russell’s songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Nanci Griffith, Doug Sahm, Dave Alvin, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Joe Ely and more.

In all of his endeavours, the influences of Native American, Southwestern and Mexican culture can be found. His complex textures and bold use of colour put him in the league with other expressionist painters.

Russell’s book “Blue Horse Desert” culminates with the realization that this artist must write, make music as well as paint. The painting that dons the cover of the book was present at the opening of the show on September 2, 2104. Guests enjoyed the signature cocktail made with vodka, lemonade and lychee liquor as well as a sampling of fruit, cheese and crackers. Tom Russell himself was present and generously spoke with anyone interested in his craft.
