Southbrook Vineyards Seriously Cool Wines Review
“Wine goes in, happiness comes out,” and for Southbrook Vineyards‘ new Seriously Cool wines, happiness comes in various designs.
Produced by internationally acclaimed winemaker Ann Sperling. Southbrook’s new line of wines carries a moniker that promotes all things local. “Seriously Cool” reflects the winery’s belief in Ontario being a seriously cool region for wine and agriculture. The production of the wines not only follow the Sustainable Winemaking Ontario’s system and meet VQA Ontario’s quality standards, they also support local jobs and talents. Bottles are made in Ontario using recycled glass with labels designed by local artist Laura Wills of Messenger as the latest addition to her “Awesome Series,” an ongoing series of bright, geometric patterns to spread happiness and to “brighten someone else’s day”.
“The recipe for the series is simple,” said Wills, “Pattern + Colour = Happiness.” The Seriously Cool wines are bottled under six different labels; three for the white, and three for the red. Consumers can select the design that speaks to them.
The Seriously Cool wines were launched following two seriously cold winters in 2014 and 2015, which led to reduced harvests in Niagara. The new line provides an outlet for grapes transitioning to organic certification as the winery recovers and redevelops the supply for its highly prized Triomphe and Connect wines.
2013 Seriously Cool Red (retail price $15.95/750ml)
The 2013 Seriously Cool Red is a blend of Pinot Noir, Gamay, Zweigelt, and Syrah. It is medium bodied with notes of cherry, red fruit and berries with hints of smoke and earth. It is well balanced between fruity and savoury and is great to pair with charcuterie platters, pizzas and pastas with red sauce, steak frites, and duck confits.
2015 Seriously Cool Chardonnay (retail price $15.95/750ml)
The 2015 Seriously Cool Chardonnay is made with Chardonnay Musque, Chardonnay and Riesling. It is light to medium bodied with lush fruit on the palate and a faint hint of oak. It has balanced acidity with characters of lime that add length. The nose offers floral aromas with notes of tangy green apple, peach and subtle vanilla and caramel.
The wine is satisfying on its own but also pairs perfectly with white pastas, white finned fish, bloomy rind cheeses, white bean spreads and roast chickens.
Both wines are available at an affordable price and are ideal for sharing with family and friends.
