This December, I was fortunate to enjoy the holidays a bit earlier with my visit to the Smoky Mountains area of Tennessee, US. The focus of our trip was to go enjoy Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas 2021. I had heard about this fantastic theme park for many years but never had the chance to visit it until now. And I am so thrilled I went because it was quite a magical experience leading to one unforgettable holiday vacation in Tennessee.
I have been a big fan of the legendary American singer-songwriter, Dolly Parton (Dolly Rebecca Parton), whose classic country songs
like “Jolene,” “9 to 5“, “Islands in the Stream,” and performances on stage, tv and film have kept me (and millions of others) entertained for decades. I have always loved Dolly because she has always been
proud of her humble roots. She grew up in Sevierville, Tennessee and later
chased her dream of being a successful singer and songwriter. Back in 1986,
Parton partnered up with Herschend Family Entertainment and opened up the
award-winning (winning the Golden Ticket Awards 13 times) Dollywood theme park.
In Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, the park is the state‘s biggest tourist attraction,
with over 3 million guests annually. Dolly‘s goal was to give back to the
community she came from by providing career opportunities for local families.
The park‘s success has led to it becoming the area’s largest employer. In
addition to the main park, there is also Dollywood’s Splash Country (Dollywood’s Family Water Park), Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa, the famous exciting dinner show, Dolly Parton’s Stampede Dinner Attraction
and the new HeartSong Lodge & Resort, which is scheduled to open in 2023.
Dollywood Parks & Resorts is so enormous that one needs to spend at least 2 days seeing it all. When you walk through the park, you get taken back to the culture and traditional life in the Smoky Mountain/ Southern Appalachian area.
There are eleven areas to walk through: Showstreet, Rivertown Junction, Craftsman’s Valley, The Village, Country Fair, Timber Canyon, Wilderness Pass, Jukebox Junction, Owens Farm, Adventures in Imagination and Wildwood Grove. During the Christmas season, the annual Glacial Ridge comes to life with the tale of the two polar bears visiting their black bear cousin and enjoying the holiday spirit. The park is filled with five million lights, making an unforgettable impression at night. We took the Dollywood Express (the historic steam train) for a nighttime tour of the park, and we revelled in seeing the park all lit up. Santa was also on duty for visits, depending on how naughty or nice you were.
At Christmas, their annual specialty shows: “Christmas in the Smokies.”
which I watched, and it was so wonderfully done, and “Twas the Night
Before Christmas,” they are available for guests. I also enjoyed the
“Appalachian Christmas” show at the Parton Family Theater, and I
found it very entertaining.
Dollywood has so many to choose from when it comes to thrilling rides. There are nine rollercoasters in the park for those who crave excitement: The Mystery Mine, Lightning Rod, Tennessee Tornado, Firechaser Express, Wild Eagle, Dragonflier, Thunderhead Wooden Coaster, Blazing Fury, and more. Among the rides, the Whistle Punk Chaser is a junior rollercoaster, which I proudly went on.
There are many other rides in the park, like the Drop Line and Lumberjack Lifts in Timber Canyon, Black Bear Trail and Treetop Tower in Wildwood Grove. In
Craftsman’s Valley, there is the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, which protects
American Bald Eagles. There are a variety of dining options and shopping to
keep oneself busy as well. And nothing wrong with taking home a souvenir (or
two) from Dollywood.
At 9 pm, the spectacular fireworks were something not to be missed. Spending
the holidays at Dollywood Smoky Mountain Christmas was absolutely fantastic.
It was effortless to get to Dollywood Parks & Resorts by flight via Delta into Knoxville Airport, then a 45-minute drive to Pigeon Forge. Pigeon Forge has lots of accommodations as well. A special Dollywood Trolley from Pigeon Forge runs throughout the day and
night to quickly get you into/out of the park.
Dollywood Parks & Resorts is open annually from mid-March – early January.
