The historic Peter Pan Bistro, an icon in the Queen West social scene, which originally opened in 1936, has recently undergone a revitalization and is now re-open for business under new ownership.
Friends and the media were hosted for a preview on March 17, 2015, the night before the Grand Opening. Bar manager and self-taught mixologist Joshua Prout has created a tantalizing and intriguing cocktail menu.
“Fables of the Green Forest” containing absinthe, rye, gin, cucumber, citric acid and chlorophyll, sounds like a science experiment but tastes quite refreshing. “Land of the Silver Birch” is a mix of burnt flower Canadian whiskey, birth vermouth and Riesling bitters and included the use of smoke. A combination of vodka, elderflower, carrot, apple, lime and celery bitters is known as “What’s up Doc”.
Many of the ingredients are made in house, even the tonic water for the classic G&T!
Joshua will gladly create a “bespoke cocktail” when you let him know what your favourite flavours are.
Executive Chef Noah Goldberg’s menu, which is French with some British influence, brings refinement to this neighbourhood restaurant. He has updated classic European dishes with modern twists. For example, Welsh rarebit is served with Worcestershire caviar, and Pizza is topped with bone marrow, parsley, caper, shallot and a lemon vinaigrette.
Honey madeleine’s are served warm from the oven.
Service Manager CC Simmons brings his twenty years of experience managing restaurants to Peter Pan Bistro; whereas, Jay Whitley, brings his love of wine to the position of Wine Manager.
The décor has not changed much. The tin ceiling and oak booths are still present. Marty Goldberg showed us the new second floor private dining rooms and event space, now under construction but set to be open this summer, which will have the same traditional and modern ambiance.
Hopefully, a second-floor patio will be open just in time to enjoy the hot and humid Toronto summers on Queen Street West!
