Silver Ball 2016 in support of Providence Healthcare Foundation took place in the Canadian Ballroom of Toronto’sFairmont Royal York Hotel on November 12, 2016. This fundraiser for Providence Healthcare Foundation is Toronto’s longest running gala. The evening started with a reception where a signature cocktail called the “Providence Potion” made with gin, peach schnapps, lime juice and blue curacao to give it a wonderful colour was offered. Passed hors d’oeuvres included spicy shrimp on toast, a spoon of braised short rib on whipped mashed potatoes topped surrounded by a beef jus, breaded and fried artichoke balls, and smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill on a small Yorkshire pudding. The Silver Ball presented over 200 silent auction items to bid on including a Crown Verity Barbeque grill(retail value of $7,500); diamond and pearl Earrings by Yvonne Jerred (retail value of $9,800), and a Toronto Raptors Box Suite valued at $6,000.
This year, the Silent Auction went hi-tech; everyone was able to track and update their bid on a tablet at their dinner table! The largest prize of the evening; a $75,000 2017 Lexus RX350 donated by Lexus on the Park; could have been yours with a purchase of a single $150 raffle ticket. The emcee for the evening was Ken Shaw who has been involved with Providence Healthcare for over twenty years. Kevin Dougherty, Chair of Providence Healthcare Foundation Board and Andrew Branion, Executive Vice President and Group Treasurer from Scotiabank gave remarks before the dinner which started with a Spiced Sesame Crusted Rare Tuna and Octopus Confit followed by a Herb Crusted Beef Tenderloin with Savoyard Potatoes, Roasted Artichokes, and a Cabernet Jus. Ghost Pines Chardonnay and Merlot by E & J Gallo Winery accompanied the meal. A Flourless Chocolate Cake and Oreo Cheesecake served with cherry compote and raspberry coulis had me wanting more dessert! The headline entertainment for the night was Collabro, four young men singing theatrical music and winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2014. They looked great and sounded even better! Shawn Brady and the U2 cover band Elevation ensured that everyone was up and dancing in the ballroom while pianist Rob Creamer provided a more intimate experience in the lounge. The eight hundred guests at this year’s Silver Ball raised over one million dollars for Providence Healthcare; a great success!
