Sound Image Competition – The Analogue Gallery

The 4th Annual Sound Image Competition was held last Thursday at the Analogue Gallery. The photography competition was open to all photographers, from amateur to professional, and gives them the opportunity to show off their photography in a gallery setting. The exhibit runs until March 29th at 673 Queen St. West. All photographs are available for purchase, drop by if you can!

This year’s contest was judged by Barrie Wentzell (Photographer), Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), Gaby Henderson (host of Retro 30 on M3), Lucia Graca, (Analogue Gallery Owner + Photographer), Roz Weston (Host of ET Canada) and Katherine Holland (Photographer).

The works included some very special moments of rock captured on film, some of my favourite shots included Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Bono, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.

It was a packed house, and as a budding photographer it was great to discuss photography with other enthusiasts and professionals.

I was fortunate enough to speak to this year’s first place winner Roger Cullman. I asked Roger how he started off as a photographer. Roger started off as a writer and went to a lot of these events with a camera in hand. When the opportunity arose to attend a concert with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds he jumped at it. And that led him to creating the winning piece of the Sound Image Competition 2015.

“Fans surround me in every direction as Nick Cave stands a mere arm’s length away. I’m almost blinded by the spotlight shining on him. I do my best to frame his face in front of the spotlight, forming a backlit, halo-like effect.” says Roger.
Roger created this winning piece with the ultra-wide Zeiss 12mm 2.8 lens which helped convey the immersive feel and energy.
“Nick Cave exuded immense showmanship and professionalism, making this my favourite concert to photograph in recent memory.”
