Depending on your blood sugar level, Sunday, November 8th’s Toronto Luxury Chocolate Show was either a sweet heaven or a diabetic nightmare. Held at the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, the fifth annual chocolate bonanza attracted all ages who were unified by a sweet palette.
There were chocolate cooking demonstrations, wine and chocolate pairing classes, hourly chocolate eating contests, a truffle-making station, and even a chocolate painting stand.
Of course, dozens of tables selling chocolate in all forms were present. Some vendors offered free samples, though more were selling theirs for one to three tickets that could be purchased at 10 for $10. The admission was $25.
There were truffles and chocolate bars, of course, but also chocolate shoes, teas, butter (hand moisturizer), chocolate-covered berries, shortbreads topped with chocolate, teas infused with chocolate, and much more.
Stand-outs included Two Friends Chocolates whose chocolate was infused with Indian flavours, namely curry masala and coconut with a spicy aftertaste and delicious bite.
Giddy Yoyo‘s Love Butter worked wonders as a hand moisturizer, and their chocolate-covered berries, such as raspberry, struck the right balance between the sweetness and the tartness of fruits.
T by Daniel‘s Chocolate Mar-tea-ni nicely blended chocolate notes to a black tea without going overboard on sweetness.
The Nutty Chocolatier perfectly fused pumpkin in one chocolate, marked with an orange top, and key lime in a green-top chocolate. They were soft and delicious.
East end favourite, Mary Macleod‘s tasty shortbread topped with Belgian chocolate, worked to fine effect.
In between nibbles, chocolate-goers enjoyed hourly chocolate-eating contests that anyone could sign up and gorge on two pieces of chocolate in two minutes, which is harder to do than it sounds.
It was a fun afternoon. Now, it’s time to work out those calories.
