Regent Park Gala 2016 – Capitol Event Theatre
On Thursday, May 5th, 2016, over 500 young professionals gathered at the Capitol Event Theatre for the 3rd Annual Regent Park Gala. Hosted by the 3TO6 Team and the MLSE Foundation, this gala benefit raises funds to keep sustainable after-school recreational programs in the neighbourhood of Regent Park. As part of Regent Park’s ongoing revitalization project, the MLSE Foundation built a state-of-the-art athletic grounds that features a soccer pitch, basketball court, and an outdoor hockey rink. The rink will provide the 2,810 youth who live in Regent Park access to sports and play so they can have a creative outlet for their energy, stay healthy and active, and add to the changing social fabric of this once marginalized neighbourhood.

The gala started with a glamourous VIP reception where guests were offered hors d’oeuvres, specialty cocktails like Dutch Mule, and raffle tickets. The silent auction offered some really great sports and fashion related prizes including Rachel Sin dresses; autographed jerseys from the Leafs, Raptors, and Toronto FC; and a behind the scenes tour of Hockey Night in Canada. Toronto Maple Leafs alumni Wendel Clarke and Rick Vaive, as well as Toronto Furies players Emily Fulton, Jenelle Kohanchuk, Julie Allen, and Sonja van der Bliek all made appearances at the gala and took pictures with guests.

During the evening, Patricia Jaggernauth, CP24 News Anchor, approached the stage to thank the sponsors and all of those involved in the coordination of the event, and to promote the raffle’s grand prize, which was a return trip for two people anywhere in North America, including Hawaii. She lit up the stage and captured everyone’s attention with her high energy, charm, and enthusiasm for the cause.
Shortly after Patricia Jaggernauth left the stage, the entertainment for the evening commenced. Entertainment included DJ Tommy Rckbttm and a professional violinist; The Cameltones cover band; and DJ Kaiser Somes. DJ Tommy Rckbttm and The Cameltones’ sets were good but with over 500 people in the room, the acoustics of the venue did not do the entertainment enough justice. However, when Maestro Fresh Wes performed, everyone in the venue perked up and turned their attention to the charismatic rapper/actor/producer/’Godfather of Canadian Hip-Hop’ and his hype man. During his set, he brought up onto the stage actor Suresh John and members of the Toronto Furies women’s hockey team. He performed a total of three songs, including ‘Let Your Backbone Slide’ and ‘Stick to Your Vision’. At the end of the night, everyone’s attention turned to the NBA playoff game that was playing on the monitors. That evening, the Toronto Raptors squared off against the Miami Heat where the Raptors won the game 96-92. The evening concluded with DJ Kaiser Somes playing music and the remaining guests enjoying gourmet desserts and Domino’s Pizza.
