Joe (Giuseppe) Mercurio is a true Italian Renaissance Man!
Not only is the Proprietor of Bar Mercurio which has been operating in the same spot on Bloor Street for seventeen years, but he is an avid abstract painter and photographer!
Bar Mercurio is known for its authentic Italian thin crust pizzas with a family recipe which dates back to 1923 made with only the freshest of ingredients.
The Pizza Gamberi is topped simply with fresh shrimp and the Pizza Rapini with, what else, rapini!
New to the menu is the Pizza Maiale: tomato, cheese, roasted fennel with cured and smoked pork belly. Joe has knocked it out the park (or Varsity Stadium down the street)!
For an authentic Italian pizza try the Capricciosa featuring ham, and artichokes topped with an egg!
Besides the family recipe, the “state of the art” pizza oven from Italy is also a secret to their success.
So sure of the taste of their pizzas, Bar Mercurio launched their “Love Our Pizza or It’s Free” Challenge today which goes for one month. In order to accept the challenge, guests must email Joe a dinner reservation: giuseppe@barmercurio.com
The in-house made gnocchi gorgonzola tastes like his Nonna made it in the back herself!
For antipasto, the Polpi ai Ferri (grilled octopus), the Torta di Granchio (crab cake) are already crowd pleasers on the menu.
The Calamari Fritti Piccanti (spicy fried calamari) and Tonna Ahi al Nachos (Ahi tuna on a crispy won ton) are new on the seasonal menu and a must try.
The prosecco and sparking red wine were great with starters, dinner and even dessert! The home made flan, tiramisu and pistachio ice cream took us to Italy and back!
