Introduction:
As a newbie to the world of diamonds, I embarked on an exhilarating journey to find the perfect gem to capture the essence of my tragic past romance. After being proposed to a few times (yes, you read that right!), I realized that understanding the intricacies of diamond quality is essential for making an informed decision. So, join me as I delve into the enchanting world of diamonds, uncovering the secrets to identifying the best quality stones. Along the way, I’ll share my personal tragic, deceitful past romance that will make your diamond quest even more memorable.

  • Unveiling The Diamond Basics:

Our journey begins with the basics. Diamonds are more than just dazzling gems; they embody love and commitment. I remember when my partner proposed, the excitement and anticipation were palpable. But what exactly makes a diamond special? This chapter explores the diamond quality’s 4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight. I’ll break down each aspect in an easy-to-understand manner, ensuring you become a pro at identifying the best quality diamonds.

  • Chapter 1: The 4 Cs of Diamonds:

Long before a diamond reaches an engagement ring setting, experts assess its quality based on the famous four C’s: carat weight, cut, clarity and colour.
Carat weight refers to a diamond’s size in carats, but beyond that, cut is king. A diamond’s cut impacts how much of its internal brilliance and “fire” reaches the surface to maximize sparkle. The ideal cut proportions allow the maximum light in and back out.
Clarity pertains to how free of inclusions (internal flaws) the diamond is. Even tiny imperfections can dull a diamond’s brilliance. The highest clarity grades, FL and IF, are the most eye-clean stones.
Lastly, colour rates how colourless — or tinted — a diamond appears to the naked eye, with D being completely colourless and diamonds darker than J usually reserved for accent stones.
With these four characteristics in mind, my choice of proposal diamonds decidedly improved! But there were still finer details to consider.

  • Examine a Diamond Under Magnification:

While carat size, cut rating and clarity grade help narrow your options, nothing compares to examining a diamond under 10x magnification. A jeweller’s loupe reveals flaws invisible to the naked eye, highlighting the cut quality.
Look for well-proportioned, symmetrical facets with smooth, polished edges. Check for feathering, chipping and other flaws. Turn the diamond to spot any dark spots that indicate inclusions. Only diamonds that pass this “magnified test” ensure a beautiful, balanced performance in an engagement ring.
The more intensely a diamond sparkles under magnification, the more radiant it will appear on your future fiancée’s hand. I learned this lesson the heartbreaking way – taking it to a jeweller under a jeweller’s lights on a solo Paris getaway!

  • Chapter 2: Beyond the 4 Cs:

Beyond the “typical” diamond quality markers, consider other factors that impact beauty and value:
Shape: While rounds remain popular, fancy cuts like cushions, pears and emerald shapes can offer more significant fire and brilliance when cut well.
Table size: The diamond’s “footprint” is measured as a percentage of its total height. A smaller table (50-58%) allows more light for a more fabulous sparkle.
Polish/Symmetry: Even polished facets free of flat spots contribute to a diamond‘s visual appeal.
Culet size: The tiny facet at a diamond‘s bottom point. A “pointed” culet aids light performance, while larger ones dull it.

  • Chapter 3: The Exquisite Cut and the Dance of Light:

Picture this: a moonlit evening, a candlelit dinner, and a sparkling diamond that catches the light with every movement. The cut of a diamond is crucial as it determines its brilliance and sparkle. Join me as we delve into the fascinating world of diamond cuts, from the classic round brilliant to the exotic marquise and pear shapes. Discover the secret behind the diamond’s ability to reflect light, creating a mesmerizing dance of brilliance that will leave you breathless.

  • Chapter 4: Clarity: The Window to a Diamond’s Soul:

Every diamond has its unique personality, and its individual quirks are revealed through its clarity. Join me as we embark on a lacrimal adventure to understand the world of diamond flaws and inclusions. From the whimsical story of a diamond with a birthmark to the tragic tale of a cheeky inclusion, we’ll explore how clarity affects a diamond‘s beauty and value. Discover the art of finding a diamond with exceptional clarity that will make your heart skip a beat.

  • Chapter 5: Colors of Love:

In this chapter, we’ll dive into the vibrant world of diamond colours. From the purest white to the rarest fancy colours, diamonds come in a spectrum of hues. I’ll guide you through the colour grading scale, helping you understand how colour influences a diamond’s value and overall appearance. Get ready to explore the romantic symbolism behind coloured diamonds and the stories they can beautifully tell.
Here are the main points about diamond colour and how to identify the best ones:
Diamonds come in various colours, from colourless to yellow, brown, and black. The more colourless a diamond is, the more valuable it tends to be.
• Colorless diamonds are the most expensive and desirable. They are also called D, E, and F colours (absolutely colourless). These diamonds have no detectable colour when viewed under normal lighting conditions.
• Faint yellow diamonds are next in value and referred to as G-J colours. They have a very slight hint of yellow or brown tint.
• Light yellow diamonds are referred to as K-M colours. They have a noticeable yellow tint that is easily detectable. Their value decreases the more intense the yellow colour is.
• Brownish yellow diamonds are referred to as N-R colours. Their value continues to decline based on their brown or yellow hue intensity.
• To identify the best diamonds, look for entirely colourless stones with no detectable hue under bright lighting conditions. Those with D, E, or F colour grades will be the highest value.
• The colour of a diamond is also affected by its clarity and cut. Diamonds with higher clarity grades and better cuts will often appear more colourless, even if they have some colour internally.
• The best way to evaluate diamond colour correctly is to see the stone in person under bright lighting and compare it to known colour reference standards. Photos can be unreliable.
Some common colour reference standards used to evaluate diamond colour include:
• GIA ColorScope – This is a diamond colour comparison device used by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). It contains a series of colour reference slides in graduated shades from D (colourless) to Z (very yellow). A diamond is viewed through the ColorScope and matched to the closest colour slide for grading.
• D-Z colour scale – Many diamond grading labs use this simple numeric scale from 0 to 24 to grade a diamond’s colour. Lower numbers indicate better colour, with D being absolutely colourless and Z being very yellow.
• GIA Ideal Cut diamond – The GIA has an Ideal Cut diamond that is the basis for an “ideal” colourless diamond. It is used as a colour reference for comparison when grading other diamonds.
• GIA master set diamonds – The GIA maintains a set of master diamonds for each colour grade from D to Z. These serve as the standards for what constitutes that respective colour. Actual diamond grading is done by comparing a stone to these master set diamonds.
• Pictures and photos – While not as accurate as using actual diamonds as references, photos and images of diamonds in different colour grades are sometimes used to illustrate the comparative colours. They usually show the same diamond in different lighting to highlight colour variations.
• Flame fusion synthetic diamonds – Laboratory-grown synthetic diamonds with perfectly colourless grades are sometimes used as ideal colour references. They provide a baseline for a colourless diamond.
The key is to compare a diamond to known colour reference standards under standardized lighting conditions to determine its actual colour and minimize subjectivity in grading. This helps ensure consistent and accurate diamond colour evaluations.

  • Chapter 6: Carat Weight: Size Does Matter (But Not as Much as You Think!):

It’s time to debunk a common misconception: carat weight does not solely determine a diamond’s quality. In this chapter, we’ll unravel the truth behind carat weight and its significance in the diamond world. I’ll share a heartwarming story of a small yet mighty diamond with immense sentimental value. You’ll learn to balance carat weight and personal preferences perfectly, ensuring your chosen diamond reflects your love story.

Congratulations! You’ve now become a diamond connoisseur, ready to embark on your own journey to find the perfect gem. Armed with knowledge about the 4Cs, the enchanting world of diamond cuts, mesmerizing colours, and the intricacies of clarity and carat weight, you’re well-equipped to make an informed decision.

So, embrace the romance, add a touch of humour, and embark on an exotic adventure as you search for the diamond that will forever symbolize your love and commitment.

Fluorescence: Some diamonds glow blue under UV light, losing colorlessness and making whites appear yellow. Avoid strongly fluorescent stones.
By learning how these finer diamond qualities impact appearance and performance, my rejections went from “ruthless” to “cruel.” I hope these insights inspire you to help you identify the phonies around you – those who pretend to express love and care. After all, compared to men, a diamond really is a girl’s best friend!
