SOLocal Organic Tofu Cooking Competition – George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts
With the mission of increasing vegan protein options in cooking, especially at Ontario institutions, Sol Cuisine Inc., the makers of natural Non-GMO, Wheat- and Gluten-Free, Kosher, Halal, and Organic vegan products, developed the SOLocal Protein Project which is also supported by the Greenbelt Fund.
The first SOLocal Organic Tofu Cooking Competition took place at George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts on Tuesday, February 24th, 2015. Four students of the College: Nicole Pisarenko, Uk-Rae (Ryan) Cho, Eun Mee Park and Salisha Surajram participated in the live cooking competition.
These aspiring chefs were charged with the task of creating healthy and tasty dishes using Sol Cuisine’s Organic Artisan Tofu, an Ontario and Greenbelt-grown organic tofu, as the star ingredient.
The Greenbelt Fund is a non-profit organization, supported by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, which works to enhance the viability, integrity, and sustainability of agriculture in the Greenbelt and Ontario.
Each of the young chefs was given fifteen minutes to prepare and a half hour to cook. The team of judges was headed up by the Director of George Brown Chef School John Higgins. The President of Sol Cuisine Dror Balshine, Chef Kelly Hughes of the Greenbelt Fund and food blogger Mary Luz Mejia were also tasting judges.
Second place was awarded to Salisha Surajram for her Braised Tofu and Beef with wilted Bok Choi on Cilantro Pesto. George Brown College Chef School‘s second year Culinary Management student Eun Mee Park took home the 2015 SOLocal Organic Tofu Cooking Competition‘s first place with her Asian-Style Crispy Tofu Pizza. She received the chance to have her recipe featured on the menu at a local hospital or long-term care home in 2015 and the top prize of $1,000.
