Upon entering TIFF Bell Lightbox, guests were sent back in time to the 1960’s and 1970’s into the excitement of Andy Warhol‘s The Factory.
On the main floor, the new TIFF exhibition, Andy Warhol: Stars of the Silver Screen, is an incredible collection of items from The Andy Warhol Museum. It reveals Warhol‘s obsession and admiration of celebrity culture and features his earlier artworks, photographs, films and videos.
In his personal collection of Hollywood photographs, there were many images of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, in addition to Polaroids of stars like Farrah Fawcett and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Factory superstars Edie Sedgwick, Joe Dallesandro, Mario Montez, and Viva were also well represented.
There is so much to explore in the exhibition, and it shows Warhol as a true visionary in the world of art and culture.
The video installation from Director X “Everyone Will Be Famous For 15 Seconds” featured internet celebrities and projections to show how Warhol predicted today’s celebrity frenzy.
Artist Jacob Niedzwiecki turned the loading docks into Factory ’15 where guests silkscreened their own Warhol artworks.
Warhol‘s famous old red couch was there begging to be laid upon, much like back in the Factory days.
FE loved the Disco Piñata designed by TIFF BoomBox committee member, Kyle Kofsky.
The second floor featured Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a 60’s band rehearsal space, created by The Young Lions Music Club. It was similar to the one Warhol used with The Velvet Underground.
Also on the second floor were makeup artist stations that bejewelled guests to give everyone the super fashionable look.
The third floor was quite special with the sensual dance piece entitled Warhol: Sex.Chaos. Collection.Obsession. from choreographer Kaitlyn Regehr.
The dancers brought guests into the mix so that all become one.
It was a surreal experience.
Kardinal Offishall was the special guest emcee for the evening, and he kept the energy going. Guests danced all night long.
Silver confetti showered the dance floor, making it feel like all of us were at Studio 54 with Warhol and the stars.
It was one memorable night and the spirit of Andy Warhol was definitely in the air.
Andy Warhol: Stars of the Silver Screen runs til January 24, 2015 and is definitely worth checking out.
