September 20 was the day for fashion designer Hilary MacMillan’s Pop Up for her Fall/Winter 2018 Collection. Toronto Designer Hilary MacMillan’s clothing studio is located in Cabbagetown in a beautiful Victorian house on Carlton Street in Toronto.

A designer since 2013, Hilary is a Canadian designer whose specialty is womenswear – dresses, shirts, jeans, coats, and jackets. She is known for her Varsity jackets with strong messages such as FEMINIST, EQUAL PAY or DON’T ASK ME TO SMILE written in capital letters on the back.

What most inspired Hilary to design these Varsity jackets with such strong messages?

Hilary got her inspiration by attending the Women’s March in Washington D.C. After that experience Hilary realized that since feminism is such an important message then there must be a market for feminist clothing. She started with her notes on her designer bags and pins and then designed the Varsity jackets with the messages. She’s hoping to spread her message Varsity jackets to a Men’s line of clothing in the future.
A lot of Hilary’s clothes are made at her Carlton Street Studio. Hilary MacMillan plans on being an entirely vegan brand by SS19. Presently her clothing is free of cruelty to animals, meaning no leather, fur, exotic skins or feathers.
The Hilary MacMillan Pop Up was a chance to see the Fall and Winter 2018 collection. Her clothing was wonderfully displayed on mannequins and racks. Shoppers were eager to try on the designer clothing to see which samples to order. So many people wanted to try on the outfits that Hilary’s office and workshop rooms had to be used as additional changing rooms! Hilary’s clothing is described as trendy, adventurous and affordable. Created with bold, colourful prints and beautifully textured materials and exciting designs.
Hilary describes herself as

a lifelong learner, continually learning to keep her designing business running smoothly.

She’s currently the designer, product manager, and web designer among other roles in her designing business. Speaking with Hilary, one could feel the enthusiasm and creativity flowing. Hilary MacMillan is a designer to follow carefully! Hilary’s FW18 collection is now available across Canada in Hudson’s Bay stores and online purchases.
In addition to this FW18 Pop-Up event, Hilary MacMillan also participated in the “Made Inland Pop Up Shopping” event in Toronto from September 21 – 22.
