也許這是家鄉的呼喚,或者是殘編想家太久。經過漫長近一年之久的閉關防疫,我們今天終於決定踏出家門,造訪我們最喜歡的奢華酒店之一:香格里拉台北遠東國際大飯店的遠東CAFE,享用一餐高級自助餐,好好犒賞悶壞了的自己。砸下8千萬重新改裝打造的「遠東Cafe」,重新開幕迎接饕客的主題就這麼巧是「加拿大美食嘉年華」?不禁讓殘編心想,我找到了歸宿,這會不會是我生命中「最後的晚餐」?不過能回家吃最後一餐,殘編也死而無憾了。

Maybe it’s a calling for home. Or perhaps I’m just terribly homesick. It’s been too long. After caging ourselves for almost a year due to COVID-19, we finally decide to treat ourselves to a decent buffet at one of our favourite luxury hotels, Shangri-La, which has just gone through an 80 million NTD renovation and reopened its doors for its loyal guests. The upgraded restaurant‘s theme just happens to be “A Culinary Journey to Canada, ” What are the chances? The coincidence makes me wonder if it’s fate? Or have I finally reached my “Final Destination” after battling Death for decades? Maybe this is “The Last Supper” of my life. If so, I have no regrets. At least I’m home, Canada.

「加拿大美食嘉年華」是遠東Café與加拿大駐台北貿易辦事處、加拿大牛肉協會、The Lobster Council of Canada及加拿大豆類協會 (Pulse Canada)合作的活動。下午茶從下午2:30開始,我們準時到達時已經有很多客人在門口排隊。我想這些迫不及待的饕客多數應該是跟殘編一樣在台灣思鄉的加拿大人吧?。通過體溫檢查之後,迎接我們的是門口穿著超大尺碼Roots T恤的加拿大大型灰熊(棕熊)巨型娃娃,搞得殘編超想「熊抱」它!但是在數多工作人員的監督下,我很努力的把內心的澎湃與衝動強忍下來,否則不知道又會惹出什麼麻煩。盛宴的重點食材加入加拿大的一些頂級食材,如牛肉、龍蝦、鮭魚和扁豆等,設計出一系列令人垂涎的菜餚。

Cafe at Far Eastern, Shangri-La‘s Canadian-themed feast collaborates with the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, The Lobster Council of Canada, Pulse Canada, and Canada Beef International Institute.
Afternoon tea starts at 2:30 PM, we arrive on time, and there is already a lineup. I’m guessing most of the early guests are homesick Canadians in Taiwan like myself. After you pass a temperature screening protocol, a jumbo-sized Canadian grizzly bear dressed in a plus-size Roots t-shirt greets us upon entrance. The feast focuses on a few top-quality Canadian ingredients such as beef, lobster, salmon, blueberry, and lentils to curate an array of mouth-watering dishes.
一進入餐廳,寬敞明亮的空間到處掛滿加拿大國旗:天花板、桌子和各大食物主題區,喚起貴賓每次回加拿大通關時的「歡迎回家」入境看板。我們桌上的多肉盆栽也插上迷你加拿大國旗。此時,殘編淚水已在眼眶中打轉。
熱鬧的空間採完全開放式廚房的概念,超過十大主題美食區的每一站都有多位廚師現場烹飪。殘編還是第一次見到這麼多大廚師同時站崗。所有廚師值班時全程戴口罩,客人在自助吧取餐時也規定必須戴口罩。

Once you enter the restaurant, you notice the bright and spacious venue is decorated with Canadian flags everywhere, hung on the ceiling, tables, and food stations that will remind you of every time you cross the “Welcome home” Canadian border. Even the succulent on our table has a mini Canadian flag beside it. At this point, I’m tearing up a little.
The vibrant space features a dynamic, open market with over 10 live kitchen stations. Each station is open-concept with multiple chefs on-site cooking live. Witnessing so many professional chefs on duty at the same time is a first. All chefs cook with their masks on at all times, guests are required to wear masks when self-serving as well.
入口是台灣最著名的鼎泰豐主題站。平常吃個鼎泰豐都要等到天荒地老,但儘管不用等叫號碼牌的鼎泰豐誘人,我們胃口還是要保留給加拿大,所以這站忍痛跳過。再往前走向即是放著超大塊「熟成美國肋眼牛排」和使用台灣豬的巨無霸「蜜汁烤火腿」現切給客人吃,粉嫩的牛排竟有松露醬可以加!同台的有碳烤海鮮跟肉類,都很搶眼。相鄰的是中餐站,然後往中間走是備有7種沙拉醬的沙拉站,這一站有一區是獻給專門使用豆類製成的沙拉。

Close to the entrance, you see Taiwan‘s most famous Ding Tai Fung station. But we are saving our appetite for Canada, so screw that. Moving forward, there’s a table with a huge “Roasted Aged US Rib Eye Steak” and jumbo “honey glazed ham” made with Taiwan pork sliced to order. Truffle sauce can be added to the tender steak. The grilled seafood and meat on the same table are also eye-catching. The adjacent station serves Chinese cuisine. Then there is a salad station with over 7 kinds of dressings and a section dedicated to salads made with pulses.
殘編自從營養學滿分畢業後就變超挑食,對胃口的空間也超級斤斤計較,因此今天捨去平常用來開胃的生菜沙拉,以高蛋白質、高纖維及低脂肪的超級沙拉「加拿大扁豆希臘沙拉 」和「三豆鮮蔬沙拉」代替。沙拉區有超過七種沙拉醬可自行添加,包括「東南亞醬」、「覆盆莓醋」、「千島醬」、「凱撒醬」等。除此之外還有各種核果跟水果乾可以添加。

I’ve been a picky eater and super stingy with my appetite ever since I aced my nutrition course. Today, I drop my regular salad and start with these high-protein, high-fiber, and low-fat, superfood salads made with pulses. There are over seven kinds of dressings in the salad station, including “Southeast Asian sauce,” “Raspberry vinegar,” “Thousand Island sauce,” and “Caesar sauce,” and so on. Also, there are various toppings, including a variety of nuts and dried fruits.
接下來是搶眼巨大的海鮮站、冰塊上放滿鮮蝦、紫扇貝、小章魚、鳳螺、和淡菜,海鮮有各種不同的沾醬可以依個人喜好添加,包括「檸檬角」、「五味醬」、「橙醋」、「薑醋汁」、「泰式辣醬」和「柚子味增醬」。

Next, there is a vast seafood station with whole shrimps, mussels, clams, Taiwanese Babylonia snails, baby octopuses, scallops on a bed of ice. An array of condiments are available with seafood, including “lemon wedges,” “Five Flavour Sauce,” “Orange Vinegar,” “Ginger Vinegar Dressing,” “Thai Chili Sauce,” and “Yuzu Miso Sauce.”
日本料理站有壽司、可以自己任選三種料的手捲、梅子麵、蕎麥麵、味增湯和「關東煮」。隱藏在忙碌的廚師身後的是裝滿巨型活龍蝦的水水族箱。殘編認為這麼霸氣的活龍蝦怎麼能這麼謙虛的躲在廚師後面呢?餐廳有供應活海鮮一定要提倡華人炫富的精神,「囂俳」(台語:ㄏㄧㄠ ㄅㄞ)的擺在大門口啊!如此一來,加購龍蝦的客人一定暴增。如果香格里拉的HR人事部有看到這篇,歡迎僱用我!
The Japanese cuisine station features sushi, make-your-own handrolls where guests can choose up to 3 ingredients for each handroll, plum noodles, soba noodles, miso soup, and “oden.” Hiding behind the busy chefs are where the tanks filled with jumbo live lobsters are. My opinion? When you feature live seafood at a restaurant, don’t be humble. Go the “flaunt-your-seafood” Chinese way and re-station the tanks at the entrance. That’s an easy guaranteed increase in revenue! If you’re reading this, Shangri-La HR, I’m available for hire! HIRE ME!

靠近落地窗的地方是東南亞美食站,有「馬來烤雞」、「印度香料米飯」,正宗的「印度咖哩」、「鮮蔬咖哩」、「薄荷羊肉咖哩」、馬來西亞的「椰香咖哩雞」、「咖哩餃」和「印度烤餅」。「印度烤餅」除了沾咖哩還可以沾「印度泡菜」、「羅望子醬」、「芒果醬」或「泰式酸辣醬」吃。

Close to the floor-to-ceiling windows is a Southeast Asian cuisine station featuring “Malay Ayam Panggang (grilled chicken),” “Jeera rice,” legit “Indian curry,” “mixed vegetable curry,” “Rara gosht (mutton Rara),” “Malaysian coconut curry chicken,” “samosas,” and “Indian Bread (pita). Besides curry, pitas can be dipped in “Indian pickles,” “Tamarind Sauce,” “Mango Jam,” or “Thai Style Sweet and Spicy Sauce.”
炸物區有值得不顧形象去搶的秒殺天婦羅炸蝦、「牛蒡條」、「炸魚」、「炸蔬菜」,全部都是現炸的,炸物區附上一系列解膩的配料,包括「高麗菜絲」、「豬排醬」、「蘿蔔泥」、「薑末」和「天婦羅醬」。旁邊是可以自己選食材的切仔麵站跟叉燒臘肉站,這兒有黑色的「肝腸」、紅色的「臘腸」、「叉燒」肉、「油雞」和「香腸」。鐵板燒區的師傅可厲害啦!不停的用快速俐落的刀工,咻咻咻、槍嗆嗆的飛刀,切炒出鐵板牛肉、「鐵板蔬菜」、「日式雞肉」、最加分的是竟還有我垂涎已久的「大阪燒」。坐在鐵板燒區旁只聽聲音還以為旁邊正上演著一場激烈的武俠小說的劍鬥。
較靠近門口有一站西餐熟食區,有燉「牛肉」、「奶油蔬菜火腿燉飯」、「義式蕃茄海鮮筆管麵」、「蒜炒高麗菜苗」、「美式鄉村玉米麵包」等。
櫃上展示者印上可愛龍蝦的圍裙可以當紀念品買回家,售價為新台幣$290元一件,如果他們在上面加加上一面加拿大國旗,我即使不下廚,也絕對買一個。
The deep-fried food station’s prawn tempura is hard to snatch but worth fighting for. Besides shrimp, there are also burdock, fish, and vegetables, all fried live. The fried food station also features a variety of condiments and dipping sauce like “cabbage strips,” “pork chop sauce,” “grated radish,” “ginger radish,” and “tempura sauce.” The make-your-own noodles station allows guests to choose ingredients they want in their noodles.
The “Char siu (Barbecue meat)” station features 3 kinds of sausages, “barbecued pork,” and “chicken oil.” The Teppanyaki chef has superb and speedy knife skills. He constantly cuts and fries teppanyaki “beef,” “vegetables,” “Japanese Chicken,” and “okonomiyaki (which I’ve been craving for the longest time)” with his flying blades making “whoosh, whoosh” sounds. Sitting beside, you’d think there’s either a Chinese kungfu battle or a fencing game going on.
Closer to the entrance, there is an International cuisine station featuring dishes like “beef,” “risotto with ham and vegetables, ” “Penne marinara with seafood,” “Stir-fried Cabbage Seedling with Garlic,” and “American Cornbread.”
Lobster print apron souvenirs are on display and available for purchase at $290NTD. I’d purchase one if they add a Canadian flag to it, even when I don’t cook.
水果區的水果除了鳳梨、西瓜等,還有一般自助餐比較少見的百香果、葡萄柚跟紅心芭樂等

In addition to the usual pineapples, watermelons, etc., the fruit station’s fruits also feature passion fruit, grapefruit, and red guava, which are relatively rare in buffets.
除了高級的哈根達斯冰淇淋、司康,還有甜點廚師精心製作的杯狀甜點,其中比較特別的是裝在看似馬丁尼杯的甜點,吃起來像西米露,上面披一層椰奶,有東南亞的口味。
自從有了上次希爾頓下午茶的經驗之後,雖然已經撐到不行,還是要來試試香格里拉的司康。遠東CAFE的司康雖然沒有希爾頓逸廊的司康硬的誇張,但與一般司康比起來,奶油相對加得較少。

In addition to fancy Haagen-Dazs ice creams and scones, there’s a selection of desserts in cups carefully crafted by the dessert chefs. The dessert we find remarkable is a dessert in a martini cup, which tastes like sago, topped with a layer of coconut milk, giving it a Southeast Asian taste.
After my experience at Hilton Sinban‘s afternoon tea, even when we’re full at this point, we just have to test the scones at Cafe at Eastern out. Shangri-La‘s scones aren’t as rock hard as Hilton‘s Sociability lounge, but it uses less cream than the usual scones on the market.
