English version /
We opened another pot of gold for this open box review. Our openbox in this post is “Jiajia” ‘s authentic Taiwanese Cabbage Stew, which is readily available in Carrefour supermarket‘s frozen foods aisle.
English version /
This frozen cabbage stew is jumbo-sized and weighs 1200g each, and is priced at just $128NTD. After reheating, the result is another pot that requires my mom to pull out her 2 trembling old guns, biceps, triceps and core muscles to carry out from the kitchen.
English version /
Cabbage stew has long been one of Taiwanese cuisine‘s well-known humble dishes. It is commonly seen in restaurants and even sold as street food at night markets. It is simple and easy to make; hence you hardly hear anyone complain about their cabbage stew, but “Jiajia” ‘s cabbage stew is no joke. It even has the taste of the famous, fancy dish “Buddha Jumps Over the Wall,” which I’ve posted a more profound introduction to the dish in my food review on “Lao Xie Zhen‘s CNY Feast Delivery ” post. After reading the nutrition label, it turns out that besides cabbage only, this pot of cabbage stew is also prepared with bean curd, pig’s skin, shiitake mushrooms, dried shrimps, and so on. The result is a soup base similar to the Buddha Jumps Over the Wall dish from Lao Xie Zhen, a well-known brand famous for its fancy banquet dishes, making “Jiajia” ‘s cabbage stew a steal.
English version /
Just as I am about to mutate into a zombie, like I do whenever I see food, I roll up my sleeves, ready to dig in. An eye-catching number on the nutrition facts label forces me to take another look. Even with its layered, rich and delicious soup base, this cabbage stew has only 39.0 calories per 100 grams, and the whole 1200g pot adds up to only 468 calories, which is less than a bread soufflé. At least if I die from overeating the entire 1200-gram pot, I still die skinny.
English version /
Wait until the product is fully thawed, tear off the sealing film and inner packaging bag. Pour the product into the bowl, cover securely with the lid and microwave at 800-watt to 1000-watt for 10 minutes.
English version /
This family never believed in microwaves. Naturally, there are no microwaves in our household. Reheating such a massive bowl with the stove requires the largest pot in our kitchen. The instruction reads reheat in hot water over medium heat for 10-15 minutes. However, fans familiar with my style know that when there’s no camera or phones involved, my patience drops to zero when it’s mealtime. So screw the water, I barbarically tear off all packaging, dump all contents into the pot, and set fire to the stove. Once the food is served, it’s a war between the elderly and the disabled. Everyone knows there’s no mercy on a battlefield, so we demolished the entire pot within fifteen minutes. The next day, we paid another trip to Carrefour to repurchase another bowl of “Jiajia“‘s frozen cabbage stew to enjoy another fancy “Buddha Jumps Over the Wall” for the poor.
English version /
The portion is humungous; the taste is like royal cuisine prepared in an imperial kitchen. Compared to the actual “Buddha Jumps Over the Wall,” I think the name suits better with Jiajia‘s cabbage stew, which prices its product at the price of Buddha’s heart.
